Route Detail
You will be driven from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate, passing through the village of Machame, located on the lower slopes of the mountain. As we leave park gate behind, our walk starts through the rainforest on a winding trail up the ridge. At some sections the trail can be muddy and slippery, so the gaiters and trekking poles are good to bring. At the end of today’s trek lies Machame Camp, where we stay for the night.
Overnight: Machame Camp
Meals: Lunch & Dinner included
On the subsequent day, the journey traverses sparse trees and bushes, leading into expansive moorlands. Progress culminates at Shira Camp, nestled upon a petite plateau amidst the elevated moorlands, offering vistas of Kibo to the northeast and Mount Meru to the west. White-necked ravens grace the skies throughout the day, adding to the scenic spectacle. Additionally, a cluster of petite caves, dubbed the Shira Caves, lies a brief stroll away from the campsite.
Overnight: Shira Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
Hiking across the high moorland alters the entire essence of our journey. We navigate the southwest flank of Kilimanjaro, passing beneath the Lava Tower and the concluding stretch of the Western Breach, before reaching our camp. Throughout the day, we've ascended to altitudes reaching 4600m, yet we adhere to the mountaineering principle of 'walk high, sleep low' to facilitate our bodies' adaptation to the altitude.
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
Our day starts by descending into the entrance of the Great Barranco, a huge ravine. We then exit steeply, up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. It’s a climb over rock, not technically demanding but long and tiring. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten Glaciers, we head towards the Karanga Valley. From here we have a steep climb up from Karanga Valley to our night’s camp at Karanga Camp, set at 3963m. For those feeling strong, we will go for a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to around 4200m before descending back to camp for the night.
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
We start off at around midnight and walk steeply upwards to the summit glaciers. We will climb the scree for 4 to 5 hours but gain incredible height over a short distance. The views are spectacular. We should be on the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) as the first rays of the sun hit us. Spectacular ice cliffs within the crater surround us and the views of the jagged Mawenzi peak and beyond are breathtaking. Another hour’s walking takes us to Uhuru Peak's summit (5895m). We begin our descent by returning to Stella Point and descending on scree slope and track back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, before finally heading down to Millennium Camp for a long well-earned rest.
Overnight: Millennium Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
A gentle trek takes us down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where we complete park formalities and receive certificates, which you can hang up with pride! We are then met by our vehicles and return to the hotel in Moshi | Arusha, where you can treat yourself to a welcome hot shower.

We first met Pandu right upon arriving, as he was the one to pick us up from the airport and transfer us to the hotel. We were quite shaterred after the long flight, but he know spot on how to make us feel welcomed and excited about the adventure to follow - he even thought us their famous song there, which i will not reveal, so I don't spoil the surprise. We then booked a trip with Pandu, to swim with the dolphins and it was one of the best days we had while there. You can tell Pandu has a way with people, he made sure we had a wonderful experience, which we would not soon forget. I highlg recommend him, if yoi are planning on vacationing in Zanzibar. He will for sure make the experience even more unforgettable:) G P2024-08-18Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Maxine Irvine2024-08-10Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Pandu and his team provided great excursions for us while in Zanzibar. We visited Prison Island, Nakupenda beach and Stone Island. On the beach we had a very tasty seafood lunch. This is the freshest seafood we have ever tasted. On Prison Island and Stone Town we received lots of information about their history. Great full day out! We also went to Mnemba Island which had the most turquoise water I have ever seen. We snorkeled, got our pictures taken and ate tasty fresh fruit. We also spotted wild dolphins and swam with them. Truly once in a lifetime experience. Thank you Pandu and your team for showing us your beautiful island and organising everything so flawlessly. I would highly recommend. 10/10 service and great value for money. Asante sana.
