Best Time to Trekking Mt. Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro, with its breathtaking landscapes and challenging trails, attracts adventurers from around the world. To maximize your chances of reaching the summit and enjoying the experience, it’s important to choose the best time of year for your climb.
January to March
Why Choose This Season?
This is one of the best times to climb Kilimanjaro, offering relatively clear skies and moderate weather conditions. Although it can be colder on the summit, these months provide excellent visibility for stunning views of the surrounding landscapes.
Highlights:
– Quieter trails compared to the peak season.
– Snow-capped peaks add to the scenic beauty.
June to October
Why Choose This Season?
June to October is the most popular season for climbing Kilimanjaro due to the dry weather. Clear skies and warmer temperatures make this an ideal time for a successful summit attempt. However, be prepared for more crowded trails during this period.
Highlights:
– Pleasant trekking conditions with minimal rain.
– The best time for photography, as the skies are clear and bright.
April to May (Rainy Season)
Why Choose This Season?
While not typically recommended due to heavy rains, some adventurous climbers may prefer this season for a more solitary experience. The lush greenery and fewer crowds can be appealing, but the trails can be muddy and slippery.
Highlights:
– Lush landscapes and blooming flora.
– Quiet trails with fewer fellow trekkers.
November to December
Why Choose This Season?
This short rainy season offers a balance between fewer crowds and reasonable weather. While there may be some rain, the conditions are generally more favourable than in the long rainy season.
Highlights:
– Less crowded trails with a mix of dry and wet conditions.
– Cooler temperatures make for a more comfortable climb.
Conclusion
The best seasons to conquer Kilimanjaro are from January to March and June to October. These periods offer the most favourable weather conditions for a successful and enjoyable climb. However, each season has its unique advantages, so consider your preferences for weather, crowd levels, and scenery when planning your adventure.
Kilimanjaro Expedition Itineraries
Climbing Kilimanjaro is governed by the regulations of the Kilimanjaro National Park. According to official rules, all hikers must be accompanied by a local guide. Park rangers will not permit entry to anyone without a professional Kilimanjaro guide.
The best times to climb Kilimanjaro are from late December to early March and mid-June to late October. During these periods, the weather conditions are nearly ideal for trekking.
Although other months have rain, it doesn’t mean there are constant heavy showers. Typically, rains begin in the latter half of the day. This allows trekkers a significant window of clear weather every day during the rainy season. There are also days without any rain.
While wildlife sightings are not the main attraction, you might see various birds, monkeys, and smaller mammals in the lower forested zones.
Climbing Kilimanjaro is generally safe when done with a reputable tour operator. The main risks are related to altitude sickness and weather conditions. Proper preparation and acclimatization are crucial.
The best route depends on your preferences for scenery, difficulty, and crowd levels. Popular options include the Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, and Northern Circuit routes.
The time it takes to climb Kilimanjaro depends on the chosen route. Most expeditions last between 6 to 8 days. An experienced hiker with prior acclimatization can complete an accelerated 5-day program. If you opt to stay overnight in the crater, climbs can extend to 9 days or longer.
No technical climbing skills are required. Kilimanjaro is a trekking peak, but it demands good physical fitness and acclimatization to high altitudes.
Accommodations vary by route. The Marangu route offers hut accommodations, while other routes use tents. Expect basic but adequate facilities.

Oana Maniutiu2024-08-23We first met Pandu right upon arriving, as he was the one to pick us up from the airport and transfer us to the hotel. We were quite shaterred after the long flight, but he know spot on how to make us feel welcomed and excited about the adventure to follow - he even thought us their famous song there, which i will not reveal, so I don't spoil the surprise. We then booked a trip with Pandu, to swim with the dolphins and it was one of the best days we had while there. Maxine Irvine2024-08-10Pandu and his team provided great excursions for us while in Zanzibar. We visited Prison Island, Nakupenda beach and Stone Island. On the beach we had a very tasty seafood lunch. This is the freshest seafood we have ever tasted. On Prison Island and Stone Town we received lots of information about their history. Great full day out! We also went to Mnemba Island which had the most turquoise water I have ever seen. We snorkeled, got our pictures taken and ate tasty fresh fruit. We also spotted wild dolphins and swam with them. Truly once in a lifetime experience. Thank you Pandu and your team for showing us your beautiful island and organising everything so flawlessly. I would highly recommend. 10/10 service and great value for money. Asante sana.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
